Administration of 6-OHDA to the exposed Pg resulted in a time- and dosedependent decrease in Pg dopamine levels. Five days after administration of 6- OHDA (1 ug/animal), dopamine levels were reduced to 67% of control levels; a concomitant rise in Pg serotonin content was observed 8 . When animals treated with low 6-OHDA were challenged with D-Ala 2 , Met 5 -enkephalinamide, $-endorphin or etorphine (1 ug drug/animal), no effect of the opiates on dopamine levels were detected. In contrast, opiates (1-10 yM) produced a significant enhancement (40- 50%) of dopamine levels in control animals.
