This research focus was motivated by his work at Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio, where he was involved in building and running custom absorption refrigeration cycles under contract to the US Department of Energy, among others.

Absorption chillers have been used in the United States since the 1950s for these reasons: they provide cooling using an energy source that is generally in low demand in that season. Although the economics works in favor of absorption chillers in some US markets, most of the other forces are arrayed against the technology such that LiBr absorption chillers carry only a small fraction of the cooling market in the United States. One measure of the interest in such systems in the United States is the number of patents on the subject, as shown in the below figure, which shows a low but continuous interest in the subject.
