By Valentin Plesu, Paul Serban Agachi

The 17th ecu Symposium on Computed Aided strategy Engineering includes papers offered on the seventeenth eu Symposium of computing device Aided technique Engineering (ESCAPE 17) held in Bucharest, Romania, from 27-30 might 2007.
The break out sequence serves as a discussion board for scientists and engineers from academia and to debate development completed within the sector of computing device Aided strategy Engineering (CAPE). the most target used to be to stress the continuity in examine of leading edge options and systematic layout tools besides the range of functions emerged from the calls for of sustainable improvement. break out 17 highlights the progresss software program know-how wanted for imposing simulation established tools.
The symposium relies on five topics and 27 subject matters, following the most tendencies in CAPE zone: Modelling, procedure and items layout, Optimisation and optimum keep watch over and Operation, process Biology and organic strategies, technique Integration and Sustainable improvement. individuals from 50 international locations attended and invited audio system provided five plenary lectures tackling huge matters and 10 keynote lectures. satellite tv for pc occasions further a plus to the medical measurement to this symposium.

* All contributions are integrated at the CD-ROM connected to the book

CAPE/PSE has contributed by providing systematic, reliable and efficient methods and tools that have now become standard for the chemical process industries as well as in chemical engineering education. The question therefore arises, what next? Where the new challenges are for CAPE/PSE and what could be the new directions for research and education? In this paper, we will try to answer these questions by looking at the current trends and the future needs with respect to chemical products and the processes that manufacture them.

Hence, PSE is more than computer-aided process engineering (CAPE) since its core business is not merely the use of computers to assist problem solving but to address the inherent complexity in process systems by means of systems engineering principles and tools in a holistic approach and to establish systems thinking in the chemical engineering profession. The field of PSE has been rapidly developing since the 1950s reflecting the tremendous growth of the chemical industry and its increasing economical and societal impact.

Also, systematic methods and tools have been developed and applied to solve industrial problems in the area of planning and scheduling, on-line optimization, solvent selection/design and many more. The above developments have been possible because of the availability of sufficient knowledge and data related to the relevant process engineering 2 R. Gani and I. E. Grossmann problems and an interest from the industry for collaboration with academia for their solution. This encouraged the development of reliable process simulation models that together with the available knowledge and data lead to the development of systematic (and/or computer aided) methods and tools for a wide range of problems for the chemical process industries.
